Savings Rate Calculator
Your savings rate is the share of after-tax income you keep. Tracking it is a simple way to see progress month to month.

How it works
Savings rate = (savings + after-tax retirement + pre-tax retirement and match) / (take-home pay + pre-tax retirement and match) x 100. Pre-tax money never reaches your paycheck, so it is added to both sides to keep the rate on the after-tax basis the BEA personal saving rate uses (saving divided by disposable income).

FAQ
Should I use gross or net income?
The BEA rate uses after-tax income, so this uses take-home pay and adds pre-tax 401(k) money and the match back in on both sides.
What is a good savings rate?
It depends on your goals. The BEA publishes the US personal saving rate each month, so you can compare yours with the national figure.
Does paying down debt count?
Extra principal payments raise net worth. Add them to savings if you treat them that way, and do it the same way every month.
